Good Ideas For Your Downtown Appear Again and Again

The work of the Mayors' Institute builds on previous planning efforts, starting with the same key elements: the new city hall, an improved riverfront and town green, and a waterfront interpretive center. While previous plans were used to help apply for federal rebuilding funds, this plan begins to pin down the location of some of these elements, which will then be designed by JBHM, the architecture firm the City has retained for these services.

The Mayors' Institute plan shifts the locations of some of these elements to capitalize on Moss Point's greatest asset, its exquisite riverfront location with views and public access to the Escatawpa River and its surrounding bayous.

The Mayors' Institute plan also proposes commercial development lining the civic improvements at the heart of downtown. Together, the public and Private development will create a lively and accessible mixed-use town center.

About the Mayors' Institute

The Mayors' Institute helps transform communities through design; they organize design workshops where mayors work with leading design professionals to find solutions to critical issues facing their cities.

The Mayors' Institute hosted a design workshop in Moss Point this past March. Mayor Bishop met with the planning and design team and presented them with a range of challenges, including riverfront redevelopment, downtown revitalization, transportation planning, local business revenue, and the design of new public buildings.

The Mayors' Institute was founded both to educate mayors about design and to educate the design community about the latest practical needs of out cities.
