A House For Curtis and Claudia

Community Partners : East Biloxi Coordination Center
Building Partners: Hands On Gulf Coast
Funding Partners: Guiding Light

Curtis and Claudia lived in their home for 20 years before Hurricane Katrina completely destroyed it. Curtis has a prosthetic leg, and Claudia also has health issues with her legs. Therefore, their new home needed to be accessible. Their 22-year old granddaughter joined them in the home upon completion.

The floor plan is based on the description of their old house, with the bedrooms on the north side and the living areas on the south side. The living areas have a pitched ceiling and high awning windows that face north, allowing for natural light throughout the year. The south side of the house has a covered ramp leading up to the back door, which allows both Curtis and Claudia access to their home and also shades the house from direct sunlight in the summer months. Construction began in November of 2007 with a 3-day framing blitz-build and has since been completed with the hard work of Hands On Gulf Coast volunteers. Funding was supplemented generously through a donation from Guiding Light.
