Sustainable Communities Initiave is a collaborative planning project intended to guide the economic growth and development of the Mississippi GUlf Coast and to improve housing, employment and transportation opportunities throughout the region. Sponsored by a grant from HUD.

Energy Conservation Design Tools, sponsored by Department of Energy. To develop and apply energy conservation design tools.

Floodproof Commercial Construction Research, sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security and South Eastern Regional Research Initiative. The grant supports the GCCDS's research and educational outreach on floodproof construction for neighborhood-scale commercial buildings.

Community Design

PRESENTATION. American Planning Association, Annual Conference, New Orleans, LA, April 2010. Resilient Design with Climate in Mind. The Gulf Coast Community Design Studio work in East Biloxi demonstrates the needs and opportunities for subsidized professional services to work in partnership with municipal and non-profit organizations to improve immediate and long-term resiliency for vulnerable communities.

PRESENTATION. Structures for Inclusion 10, Washington DC, March 2010. Community Development: Who do we work for? The Gulf Coast Community Design Studio demonstrates the effectiveness of working in communities with multiple partners. East Biloxi Housing Project is included in the inaugural group of SEED evaluated projects. Social, Economic, Environmental Design criteria used to quantify the community impact of the GCCDS work in East Biloxi.

Building Technology

COURSES and EXHIBITS. Mississippi Gulf Coast Resilient Home Building Conference, Biloxi, MS, March 2010. Assisted in the planning and participated in Resilient Home Building Conference in conjunction with Mississippi Gulf Coast Annual Home and Garden Exposition. The conference was organized by the Community and Regional Resiliency Institute (CARRI). The Gulf Coast Community Design Studio designed and built three sequential Full-scale Building Exhibits, demonstrating resilient building techniques for wood frame construction. In addition GCCDS professionals taught three courses on Resilient Building Principles for sites and foundations, framing, and building envelope.
