A House For Dinecha

Dinecha, 25, is a single parent with two young boys and a new baby girl. Before the storm, Dinecha and her two children lived in a house that had been passed down through the family from her grandmother. She works as an audiology assistant and is going to college full-time, in addition to raising her children.

Dinecha was not able to leave Biloxi before Katrina hit. After four feet of water flooded her house, she and her children swam and waded several blocks to a friend's house. When that roof caved in several hours later, they were forced to move on. She found refuge in another friend's house that was relatively undamaged, where she and her children rode out the rest of the storm, sleeping on a wet bed. After the storm subsided, she began to run out of food for her children and walked to Gulfport for help. Eventually Dinecha got FEMA assistance and contacted some family in Texas, where she stayed until she could come back to Biloxi.
