A House For Inez
Community Partners : East Biloxi Coordination Center

Inez is an elderly woman with limited mobility, who very much wished to have a house rebuilt. She was previously living in a FEMA trailer with her daughter Geraldine and Geraldine’s granddaughter, all of whom now live in their new home.
Though elevated, the house was designed with accessibility in mind, leading to the creation of a long ramp that doubles back at a landing under the roof and becomes a sloping side porch. The main living space is as open as possible, as per Geraldine’s request for the family to spend time with each other even while one person is cooking. Three bedrooms and two bathrooms comprise the west side of the house and lead directly into the main living space to avoid hallway navigation. Also, ensuring complete accessibility for the family, the crew received a Red Cross grant during construction, which allowed for the installation of a mechanical wheelchair lift.
