A House For Jewel

Community Partners : East Biloxi Coordination Center
Building Partners: Hope Force International & Church World Services

Jewel is proud to have lived in Biloxi for all 80 years of her life. She had a house when she first got married, but it was destroyed by fire many years ago. She relocated to a house that was on the border of Keesler Air Force Base, but that house was destroyed by Katrina's winds. She leased the property to the Air Force Base to use as an access point for their rebuilding. The use of the property was taking a bit more time than originally thought, and Jewel still needed a place to live.

Her son purchased her a new piece of land covered in giant live oaks. Jewel and her daughter were very certain about what they wanted. Jewel would even show up to the site to take care of her yard while the construction was happening. They worked very closely with the designers and construction volunteers to make sure they had the house that they saw in their heads. Jewel's many children and grandchildren pitched in and bought her a special front door for Christmas.
