Conceptual Master Plan

The Bayou Auguste Greenway Master Plan addresses habitat health, public access and science education.  The Master Plan identifies portions of Bayou Auguste where marsh habitat and stream bank restoration should take place.  These are areas that have been negatively impacted by human use over the past century.  Habitat restoration is essential for providing breeding grounds for the shrimp, crab, sport fish, and bird populations that play important roles in the ecology and economy of East Biloxi.
An additional component of the Master Plan is to create areas of recreation and access along Bayou Auguste for local residents and visitors to enjoy.  Large open spaces along Bayou Auguste will allow for people to have picnics, barbeques and other social gatherings. A series of trails and boardwalks winding through the bayou will encourage people to experience the unique tidal marsh and upland forest habitats.  A number of piers and observation decks are also proposed, which will allow users to fish, bird watch, or sit and relax.
These areas of access double as settings for educational activities.  This Master Plan provides opportunities for science education to students of Biloxi Public Schools as well as the broader community.  GCCDS has been involved with the Biloxi Public Schools teaching science lessons about bayou ecology since the spring of 2010.  To broaden the educational outreach of the project, signs will be installed along the trails, boardwalks, decks and piers that explain the ecology of the bayou, stormwater and tidal water systems, and the impact of human activity on these systems.  All together the Master Plan aims to create a place in this East Biloxi neighborhood that is flexible for human recreation and can be a healthy home for wildlife.
