Plants & Animals

In the spring of 2010, the GCCDS began teaching students from Biloxi elementary schools about the unique bayou ecosystems that run through their neighborhoods. The GCCDS assembled a field guide of local plants and animals and took students from the Nichols Elementary after school program, Learning Lighthouse, on a field trip to Bayou Auguste.

Students used their field guides to identify the plants and animals they found at the bayou. They learned about the importance of protecting native plant and animal species and how native species work together to create a sustainable food web. Students also identified invasive species and the harm they can cause to the local environment.

After their field trip the students made a mural to represent the new information they learned about the bayou. The mural displayed a rich habitat formed by land, water, and plants and filled with abundant water life and animals. It was hung in the school lobby so visitors and students of the school could learn more about this valuable environment in their own neighborhood.
