I-110 Underpass
Client : Biloxi Bay Chamber of Commerce + Harrison County Sand Beach Authority
The I-110 underpass project comprises two primary pieces. The first is a multi-program garden sited where I-110 spans Howard Avenue that reactivates an underused city space. At the underpass, sculptural rain collectors capture storm runoff from the highway above and channel water to planted rain gardens at either end of the covered space. This stormwater solution prevents puddles and repurposes rainwater for landscape gardens along Howard Avenue. Benches, paving and pathways complement the rain garden and provide a new public open space for gathering, eating lunch or waiting for the bus. The covered garden also creates a venue for sculptures, banners and other cultural attractions.
The second is an extension of the I-110/Hwy 90 Loop landscape design. The walkway stretching from Beach Boulevard to Howard Avenue links Biloxi’s main thoroughfares and provides an opportunity to celebrate the entrance to Biloxi, create a comfortable pedestrian path and improve roadway drainage. Flags and planted columns present a formal and low-maintenance landscape strategy that adds visual appeal for pedestrians and drivers alike. New concrete banks along the highway ramps will reduce erosion concerns and further enhance the roadway. A continuous hedge and additional landscape improvements contribute to a more pleasant pedestrian experience.
