Streetscape Design

Inconsistent utility maintenance, in combination with damage from Hurricane Katrina, has left the Soria City neighborhood in desperate need of repair regarding street lights, road maintenance, storm drainage, and parking. The GCCDS formed working relationships with the city councilwoman, the city administrator, the mayor, the deputy planner, the public works department, the city engineers, and the police department to facilitate improvement projects. To date, the City of Gulfport is working to improve the water main, fire protection and sewer system; add to and maintain the existing stock of street lights; and develop a home repair program for residents. Additionally, the students and the GCCDS created proposals for streetscape solutions involving collaboration between the City, local businesses and churches, and residents. These proposals are sensitive to the existing character of the neighborhood while addressing the need for clearly defined parking areas, improved street lighting, proper storm water drainage, and shaded, accessible sidewalks. All of these projects have been informed through maps, surveys, renderings, and presentations that the GCCDS and students worked on with community members.
