Exhibit: Made in Moss Point

Partners: National Endowment for the Arts, City of Moss Point, Blake Gordon, Ivan Mairesse

For the second community exhibit in the GCCDS' National Endowment for the Arts-funded Moss Point exhibit series, the Design Studio sought local artists and craftsmen living in the Moss Point area in order to feature their often under-the-radar work and illustrate the universal creative drive to make.

Eight residents were chosen, exemplifying a wide range of crafts: quilting, taxidermy, porcelain casting and painting, watercolor painting, wire sculpture, woodburning, rug hooking, and fashion design. The Design Studio worked with Austin-based photographer Blake Gordon and filmmaker Ivan Mairesse to produce large-format images and documentary footage of the artists, their work, and their processes.

The final exhibit opening took place on Friday, April 16th, 2010. The Studio worked with the City of Moss Point to rehab their old library space for the event, and produced and hung canvas backdrops and lighting assemblies. In addition to the images and film, the exhibit also featured shadowboxes constructed with materials and art supplies directly from the artists. The exhibit remained up for a month.

Special thanks go to the City of Moss Point; Blake Gordon; Ivan Mairesse; all the artists featured and their community groups; Scordino's for the event snacks; Jim Sipwicz at Shell Media for the printing;
